1st Lesson

                                                              Monnet School - Grade 1b

1st Lesson

Date: 16.04.2024

The subject of the lesson was Solar system planets

The Big understandings were:

- There are 8 planets are in our solar system.

- Saturn has more moons.

- Venus is the hottest planet in the Solar System.

- Mercury is closest to the earth

Essential questions were:

- How many planets are in our solar system?

- Which planet is closest to the earth?

- Which planet is the hottest planet in the Solar System?

- Which planet has the shortest day?

- Which planet has more moons?

This was the video I used: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w36yxLgwUOc

Reflection

In this first lesson I was very nervous, as it was the first lesson I was giving to several children and it was in English. Also, my mentor teacher was watching. As I went through the lesson I could tell that my nerves were disappearing. The class went as planned, I didn't run out of time, and I was ready for the second class (since I taught two classes that day). However, I could also notice the pronunciation mistakes I was making and I could also notice that clear instructions are important when working with children, as they can get confused. At the end of the class, the mentor teacher gave me several tips so I started to work on them, I could also notice that some students had less difficulties answering exercises if they were doing it in a team. Something that caught my attention, as well as the order that the group had. As an observer, I had noticed that the children shouted and did not behave when the class was not with my mentor teacher. However, everything went well and the students behaved. This encouraged me to continue teaching at the school and to improve as a teacher.

Lesson plan

Lesson title

Space- Solar system

Class length

45 min

Class/ student information

-        Grade: 1 B

-        14 students around A1-A2 level (bilingual education) and a native speaker

-        Polish and Australian nationality

Lesson aims

To:

- Develop listening skills (watching the video)

-  To make students aware of our solar system (names of solar system planets, which in order,  the hottest planet, with the most moons, with the shortest day)

- Develop speaking skills (talking about what they know about our solar system, expressing opinions).

Lesson objectives

Content

By the end of the lesson, learners will have:

- Learned about general planets information (names of solar system planets, which in order,  the hottest planet, with the most moons, with the shortest day)

 -  Learned about the order of solar system

Language

Content-obligatory language objectives

Learners will be able to:

- Name general solar system planets information (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune)

- Talk about the order of our solar system

Content-compatible language objectives

Learners will be able to:

- Answer a few questions based on the video (How many planets are in our solar system?  Which planet is closest to the earth? Which planet is the hottest planet in the Solar System?  Which planet has the shortest day? Which planet has more moons?)

- Use already know and new vocabulary to talk about Planets Properties.

cognition

- Students will be able to answer a few questions based on the video (How many planets are in our solar system?  Which planet is closest to the earth? Which planet is the hottest planet in the Solar System?  Which planet has the shortest day?  Which planet has more moons?)

- Students will be able to name the order of solar system planets

culture

- Students will be able to say that Earth is the only planet that has the conditions necessary for life to exist.

Instructional strategies used in the lesson (building background, integrating skills, using scaffolding, opportunities for output, learning phases, advanced organizers, etc.)

-        Activating prior knowledge.  Students recall what they know about Solar System.

-        Integrating skills - integrating watching (listening), speaking (pronunciation)

-        Using scaffolding to support learning of content and language. Providing different materials (video, presentation, task)

-        Integrating the skills: listening/speaking/writing.

-        Opportunities for output - a lot of opportunities for students to talk, answer questions, task

-        Learning phases - warm-up (interactive games), presentation, production.

 Lesson assessments

Formative assessment - students will be able to tell the teacher what he/she learned and to show their product to their partners.

Stages and time

Lesson procedure (describe the activities and instructional strategies)

Justification for the activity (content, language, cognition, culture)

Warm-up

3 min

T shows images about planets

T asks

-        “Do you know what this is?”

-        “Do you recognize any of the planets?

Ss answer the questions

T asks

“What do you think the lesson is about today?”

To generate interest in the theme of the lesson and target language

Language: already known language structures

Activation of schemata

7 min

In two teams

T gives pictures of the planets and the names of the planets to the students to match with their name (as they think)

T asks Ss to arrange the Planets (with the names) in order.

T and Ss review the responses of both teams

T and Ss correct the order (if some planet is not in the correct place)

T explains that Ss will see the properties of the planets.

To activate Ss’s schemata, to generate interest in the video.

Content: General information about solar system planets

Language: To provide Ss with practice at using target language in a controlled way

Cognition: Recognizing and naming planets of the solar system

Presentation

7 min

T asks the students

Which planet is closest to the earth?”

Which planet is the hottest planet in the Solar System?”

Which planet has the shortest day?”

Which planet has more moons?”

T sets the task: Watch the video:  https://youtu.be/w36yxLgwUOc?si=8VfREY7occHH_Jw5-

Ss watch the video and check their predictions for the questions

To orientate students to the overall content of the video

Content: General information about   solar system planets (There are 8 planets are in our solar system, Saturn
has more moons, Venus is the hottest planet in the Solar System, Mercury is closest to the earth)

Language:  Vocabulary to describe solar system planets (Closest, Hottest, Shortest)

Cognition: Listing characteristics of Solar system planets (There are 8 planets are in our solar system, Saturn
has more moons, Venus is the hottest planet in the Solar System, Mercury is closest to the earth)

Culture: Earth is the only planet that has the conditions necessary for life to exist.

Summary/ demonstration

5 min

At the end of the presentation

T asks Ss to do Wh answer activity

T gives them pictures of the planets and they must hold up the planet that is the correct answer.

.

To give students practice at listening for specific information.

5. OBSERVATION - TEACHER TALK – STUDENT TALK

Monnet School - Grade 1b Observation: Week of February 19 - February 23 The teacher's voice is very gentle and neutral, she has a good voice modulation, as well as a goodintonation in her speech.  The teacher asks each student something related to the activity. For each question she addresses the student by name.  On the other hand, when the teacher asks open questions, the students who want to answer must raise their hands.  When she talks to a single student, she does it in front of everyone, so everyone hears what the teacher says.  Finally, I have noticed that the teacher always listens to everything her students have to say, which allows them to feel heard and comfortable. However, when students make mistakes in their answers, the teacher c...
