Reflection

This was the last class I taught, something that I found very important, because it showed my performance and improvement throughout the observation classes. I think that the class was developed in the best way, and despite being a topic that I didn't know at the beginning, after creating my class I acquired new knowledge about black holes. One thing I noticed that I can still improve is the distribution of equipment, as there was a little confusion when making them.
Also, I made mistakes in the pronunciation of some words and some grammatical tenses. However, this helps me to avoid such mistakes in the future. This time, the time was not enough to finish my wrap-up activities, which I find acceptable, as some activities often take more time than one as a teacher expects. In the end, I left with a good taste in my mouth, as I could notice an improvement in the indications I provided to my students. A curious fact, which I think it is worth mentioning, is that one should never underestimate the knowledge of the students, as several of them had a good knowledge on the subject of black holes.
Lesson plan

Lesson title

Space- Galaxy- Black Holes

Class length

45 min

Class/ student information

-        Grade: 1 B

-        14 students around A1-A2 level (bilingual education) and a native speaker

-        Polish and Australian nationality

Lesson aims

To:

- To introduce the concept of Black Holes

- Develop listening skills (watching the video)

-  To make students aware what would happen if something got close to a Black Hole

- Develop speaking skills (talking about what they know about Black Holes, expressing opinions).

Lesson objectives

Content

By the end of the lesson, learners will have:

- learned about Black Holes characteristics

- learned about how a Black Hole is created

Language

Content-obligatory language objectives

Learners will be able to:

- Name characteristics of the Black Holes (Even Horizon)

- talk about how a Black Hole is created

Content-compatible language objectives

Learners will be able to:

- answer a few questions based on the video (What would happen if someone fell into a Black Hole?)

- use already know vocabulary to talk about how a Black Hole is created.

cognition

- Students will be able to answer a few questions based on the video (How is a Black Hole created? What would happen if someone crossed the Event Horizon What would happen if someone fell into a Black Hole?)

- Students will be able to create a mind map about Black Holes

culture

- Students will be able to say that the Black Holes are in space

Instructional strategies used in the lesson (building background, integrating skills, using scaffolding, opportunities for output, learning phases, advanced organizers, etc.)

-        Activating prior knowledge.  Students recall what they know about Black Holes and space.

-        Integrating skills - integrating watching (listening), speaking (pronunciation)

-        Using scaffolding to support learning of content and language. Providing different materials (video, presentation, task, a demonstration)

-        Integrating the skills: listening/speaking/writing.

-        Opportunities for output - a lot of opportunities for students to talk, answer questions, task

-        Learning phases - warm-up (interactive games), presentation, production (art &craft)

 Lesson assessments

Formative assessment - students will be able to tell the teacher what did he/she learn and to show their product to their partners.

Stages and time

Lesson procedure (describe the activities and instructional strategies)

Justification for the activity (content, language, cognition, culture)

Warm-up

3 min

T gives to Ss a code puzzle.

Ss answer the code puzzle.

T asks

-        “Do you know what the secret word is?”

-        “What do you think the lesson is about?”

To generate interest in the theme of the lesson and target language

Language: already known language structures

Activation of schemata

10 min

T writes questions on the board

“What do you know about Black holes?”

“Where are Black Holes found?”

“What would happen if you fell into a Black Hole?”

T asks Ss to create a mind map in teams answering the questions

Ss create a mind map with the knowledge they have about the topic.

T asks Ss to discuss the questions for 3 mins in group.

To activate Ss’s schemata, to generate interest in the video.

Content: General information about Black Holes

Language: To provide Ss with practice at using target language in a controlled way

Cognition: Recognizing and naming the Black Hole.

Presentation

3 min

T sets the task-  Watch the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oeEQf_CLARE  (Till min 2:31)

Ss watch the video and check their predictions for the 2 questions:

“Where are Black Holes found?”

“What would happen if you fell into a Black Hole?”

To orientate students to the overall content of the video

Content: General information about Black Holes (A Black Hole is created when a star dies)

Language:  Vocabulary to describe Black Holes (Event Horizon)

Cognition: Listing characteristics of the Black Holes (A Black Hole is created when a star explodes. What would happen if you fell into a Black Hole?)

Culture:  Black Holes are found in space.

Summary/ demonstration

7 min

At the end of the presentation

T asks Ss to do a mini-True/False activity

Ss must run to the place that marks false or true according to the sentences.

T explains what happen if someone crosses the Even Horizon (through a demonstration),

T nominates students to give their answers in Open Class.

To give students practice at listening for specific information.

Content: General information about Black Holes (A Black Hole is created when a star dies)

Language:  Vocabulary to describe Black Holes (Event Horizon)

Cognition: Listing characteristics of the Black Holes ( A Black Hole is created when a star explodes . What would happen if you fell into a Black Hole? Once you cross the Event Horizon there’s no turning back)

Culture:  Black Holes are found in space.

Practice (Drawing)

10 min

T shows Ss black Holes

T asks Ss to draw a Black Hole

T ask Ss to show their black hole to the class (for 3min)

To give students practice at production (art &craft)

Content: drawing using their imagination, labelling, designing.

Language: already known language and language from the video.

Cognition:  drawing using their imagination, labelling, designing.

Culture: drawing a real Black Hole

Assessment

5 min

T asks Ss

“What did you learn?”

Ss share their answers in Open Class.

T ask Ss to complete their Mind Map with their new Knowledge

To reflect on the new content Ss have learnt.

Content, Cognition, Culture: everything from this lesson – Black Holes, Event Horizon

Language: structures already known by the students

Wrap-up

7 min

T asks Ss to play a Bingo to remember the vocabulary they have learnt during the ‘space’ project.

To reflect on the content Ss know.

Extra Activity

2 min

T asks Ss to watch and dance the song: https://youtu.be/get0eM4gJWY?feature=shared

Related with Black Holes
